The Rainmaker (Sketch)

  1. That is brill. Very atmospheric. For some bizarre reason it reminds me of the Faun in Narnia. He had an umbrella and was carrying books. This being looks like he is carrying something too…

Lewis described the origin of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in an essay entitled “It All Began with a Picture”:

“The Lion all began with a picture of a Faun carrying an umbrella and parcels in a snowy wood. This picture had been in my mind since I was about sixteen. Then one day, when I was about forty, I said to myself: ‘Let’s try to make a story about it.”

    Fascinating.

There is also a street lamp in your picture and a lamp post featured heavily in Narnia. “It will not go out of my mind that if we pass this post and lantern, either we shall find strange adventures or else some great changes of our fortunes.”

    Lucy Pevensie

“The Lamp-post was a major landmark in the country of Narnia, located in the north-western area, populated by Dryads and Fauns. Resembling a London streetlamp, it stood in the middle of the forest and shone day and night. It was at the lamp-post that Lucy Pevensie first met Mr. Tumnus, who told her that it marked the beginning of Narnia.

I see Music in your picture too for some reason. The little black marks behind him remind me of musical notes though not quite formed.

There’s an emptiness in this picture but also movement with the rain and the new life in the weather. Even with ominous clouds ahead, the guy is moving forward.

    Really excellent sketch. :-)

    1. This is by far the most detailed review I have ever had for any of the sketches. You are quite insightful and well read too.

I always wonder if painting the umbrella in red would have a more contrasting effect. But the darker tone sets the tune for description.

I have no idea why the lamp post stood there. I let my subconscious flow on paper, and it helps me in deciphering my thoughts. Thus the sketches. :)

  2. For some reason this sketch brings Jack the Ripper to mind for me. It may be the hat. It’s beautiful though.

    1. Ah, that would make it more mysterious though. Thank you, you just made the sketch look more beautiful. :)
